2/7/2014 Family Update

Hello family!  Here’s how 2014 has been going for us.

Early in January we decided to get new cell phones.  Our old phones were barely functional with most gestures and commands significantly delayed.  For example on the rare occasion I received an actual phone call half the time the phone would take so long to register me swiping to answer that it would have already gone to voicemail.  We’re thinking we may have downloaded too many inane apps over time which, even after uninstalled, clogged up the phones.  There may have been some neglect and physical abuse involved but I won’t go any further down that road.  Because of the timing of our purchase of new phones and our desire to not start another contract with Verizon we bought Moto Xs (they are unlocked and easily transferrable to other providers).  We got to "custom up" the phones a bit by ordering online so mine has a black front and buttons and “Yella” engraved on a yellow back (of course). Susan’s has a white front, blue buttons, and a purple back (no engraving).  We’re hoping these phones last at least two years as we didn’t enjoy the outflow of money to buy unsubsidized phones.

On January 11th we met some friends at the Coors Brewery for a tour and lunch.  The tour was interesting even though most of us had gone on it before.  We got a slightly longer one because in the winter season less people come out for them.  I still don’t like beer but tried a few just in case.  Afterwards we went to a Tai place down the street.  It wasn’t bad although I thought the food was WAY too spicy for the amount of accompanying flavor.

As part of the ongoing house cleaning that we’re doing (mostly Susan) we gifted the bed in the white room to Kari and Alvin.  Having the bed out of the room helped Susan greatly as she had much more space to spread out.  In our revelry we bought a table and chair for the room from Ikea.  The white room is almost complete with only pictures left to hang and a small amount to organize.  We took a break from working on the white room and tackled the basement.  We bought heavy-duty shelves from Costco and spent a weekend cleaning it up.  The basement is now organized and de-junked.  It’s to the point that I feel like I’m in someone else’s basement when I do laundry or practice my guitar.  There is still a lot to do in the house but we’re still making progress.

Late in January we finally took Satchel and Tweetie for rabies shots.  They’ve had severe allergic reactions in the past and, since they have virtually no interactions with other animals besides people, they’ve been un-inoculated since the mid-2000s.  Our vet assured us pre-treating shots of anti-inflammatory would mitigate their allergies so we relented.  Of course, the puggers did fine and now we don’t have to worry about the errant varmint giving them rabies.

This last weekend was pretty busy for us.  I had to work late on Friday night for the month-end close.  I was lucky as it went smoothly and I got home around 10:00.  On Saturday we went to a party to celebrate Kari and a friend’s birthdays and the Chinese New Year.  There was a pretty good crowd in attendance and the food was tasty.  For Super Bowl Sunday we went to a neighbor’s house to see some of the game and eat more unhealthy food.  We stayed until half-time before walking home.  It was sad to see the Broncos massacred but the lack of decent commercials is what really bothered me.  The other people at the gathering also did this thing where they saved their conversations for the commercial breaks which made it so I couldn’t hear the ads.  Disappointing for sure.

My body decided my run of relatively good health needed to come to an end and I am now afflicted with an annoying sinus infection.  It’s not too bad but the recent cold air we’ve been experiencing tickles my throat and I sound like I’ve regressed to the age of 14 with my voice almost constantly cracking.  Lucky for Susan sinus infections aren’t really contagious.

The pugs have been doing pretty well this past month.  Sophie is still peeing on the floor if we aren’t paying attention or blink too long.  She has not liked the really cold weather and snow we’ve been getting.  Satchel still has all her hair and hasn’t been afflicted by her seasonal rashes much this winter.  Tweetie still looks for trouble and Bella is still a bit insane.  Bella is so interesting as she barely barks (only at meal time).  We thought she would eventually join with the others when their pug-dars go off but she still abstains.  She has been very sweet and insists on being my little spoon every night.

My band is still practicing as we have a show the first weekend of March.  Overall it’s been enjoyable and I added some unintentional hilarity trying to sing songs this last week with my sinus-infected voice.  I’ve been feeling a severe urge to buy more guitar-related stuff these past few weeks.  I am but a mortal so don’t be surprised if I mention picking up a new guitar or amp in our next update (Susan is doing her wifely duty by strongly objecting my guitar desires).

Tldr: We spent a lot of $ on new cell phones, went on a beer tour and ate spicy food, liberated the white room and basement from the tyranny of junk, made Satchel and Tweetie legal, went to a combination party, were disappointed by the Super Bowl, got sick (half of us anyways), cleaned up Sophie pee, and my band is still doing its thing.

We hope this finds you happy and healthy!

Yay sub-1000 word update!
